Back in the day (when I had a salon) I used to full on sterilise makeup brushes, by using a professional brush cleanser, and then by placing them in a UV Cabinet. Fast forward a few years, and there’s no salon, no professional brush cleanser, and no UV Cabinet! So left to my own devices, the question is – how should I clean my makeup brushes?
Some would say investing in some MAC Brush Cleanser, or something similar, and spraying brushes with Pro Hygiene Collection Brush Spray everyday would be the proper way to do it. They’re probably right and I’m not adverse to a bit of brush cleanser or spray. But here’s the thing – when it comes to deep cleansing my makeup brushes at home I absolutely swear by Johnsons Baby Shampoo! Yep you read that right. About once a week I squirt some baby shampoo into a bowl, hold my brushes under lukewarm water, then dip the brushes in the shampoo, and rinse. I do this repeatedly for each brush until the water runs clear. I then dap my brushes gently with a towel, reshape them, and put them back in their glass jars, ready to dry naturally. It seems like I’m not the only one that uses this method too. When talking to some friends I realised that they were all doing the exact same thing. Personally I think it’s the most inexpensive way to clean makeup brushes, and why pay out when you don’t need to?
